Translation Excel Template Not Openinig

Hi,
I’m unable to open the Excel template for entering translations.
When I download the blank template, it fails to open and shows an error.

Could someone please check if it’s working on their end?
If not, could you suggest a solution for this?

Checked: it does work for me.

Navigate to your downloads folder and locate the file there.

  • Is it there?
  • How big is the file that you are getting in the download?
  • What happens if you double-click it?

Thanks, Sergiy, for your prompt response.

The blank file size is 82 KB.
When I double-click to open it, it starts loading but then shows the error I shared earlier. I’ve just checked it again and the issue persists.

We also have the same problem

@vipulsinghal , @rapidasia,

please:

  1. share the *.xlsx files you’ve obtained as downloads from Survey Solutions without any transformation.
  2. share the link to your questionnaire(s) with which you are experiencing the issue.
  3. write the specific version of MS Office/Excel with which you observe the issue.
  4. indicate whether the folder where your downloaded files are placed is subject to any synching software (OneDrive, Google Drive, DropBox, etc).
  5. Get the translation file on you phone or tablet, and open it there using any app you have obtained from the Google Play or iOS store. Indicate whether the file opens all right?

It started working for me once I changed the file name. specifically, after I removed the language mentioned in square brackets [ ].

Hi

  1. Please find the original downloaded .xlsx file here: [Loading Google Sheets](https://Khmer 5)
  2. This link https://designer.mysurvey.solutions/q/details/660149f2971f4b61ae1cdb4335a64b5e/chapter/da6a1ef828b042db803bb8a953fc4e5a/group/da6a1ef828b042db803bb8a953fc4e5a
  3. My excel version is Microsoft Office 2021 Business License
  4. My file is kept locally in my pc no sync or anything
  5. I tested opening the .xlsx file on my phone via Google Drive, and it opened normally without any error message, but when download the same file to my pc again the same error message pop up.

Please help us we have a training on QRE at 8:00am tmr BKK time.

Bests

I notice that the file that I download from survey solution is .xlsm not xlsx so I cannot open it even I edited the translation in Sheet any advice here?

Chomsiri

  1. Based on what you’ve shared, this is not a file produced by Survey Solutions.

Notice the file extension is specifically .XLSM, not .XLSX.
I can’t say more because you didn’t share the link to a FILE. You’ve shared a link to a Google Sheets spreadsheet, which is NOT a file.

  2. There is no problem with the translation file obtained for “Khmer 5” from that questionnaire.

3 and 4 thank you for clarifying

  1. Thank you for confirming

Based on what you’ve described:

  1. Survey Solutions works fine and produces valid *.XLSX files. I see nothing that can be changed on our side.

  2. There is possibly something in your system (trivially a virus injecting malicious code, or something more complicated) that changes the XLSX files into XLSM files (Excel files with macros). Perhaps you also have an antivirus software or something that subsequently locks those files, preventing you from opening them (and for your own benefit).

I wouldn’t risk opening those XLSM files.

If it worked from your phone, try from a different PC, known to be in good health and if it works there, that would confirm my hypothesis.

To clarify: Survey Solutions embeds no macros in the produced Excel files. There is no reason to have XLSM extension. If your file is getting this extension, something or someone tampers with the content you are getting from Survey Solutions.

Hi Sergiy,

Thank you for your response.

I would like to clarify a few points:

  • I downloaded the translation file directly through Survey Solutions Designer without modifying it.
  • I could not upload the file directly to the forum because the system does not accept Excel file formats (.xlsx or .xlsm). That is why I shared the exact downloaded file via a Google Drive link for your review.
  • The issue occurred immediately after download, before any local modification. No macros were intentionally added.
  • I also noticed that at least one other user reported encountering a similar issue around the same time.

For now, I have managed to resolve the immediate problem by manually converting the file and successfully uploading it back into Survey Solutions.

While I appreciate your clarification that Survey Solutions does not embed macros, I hope you will consider that unexpected behavior was observed by more than one user.
It might be helpful to continue monitoring this case to ensure no underlying system, browser, or server-related issues are affecting downloads.

Thank you again for your support.

This could be related to this old issue then:

So far Excel didn’t want to save new files with this pattern in the name, but it didn’t mind opening them. Either way, the extension is *.xlsx and I interpret your case as the extension is not changing (like in what @rapidasia describes).

So the reasons for these cases might be different then.
